Committee recommends sending Trifecta Ecosystems agreement to full board after presentation about student-run mushroom project

The New Haven Board of Alders’ education committee recommended sending LM20260052 — an order that would authorize the Board of Education to enter an agreement with Trifecta Ecosystems — to the full board after a brief presentation by the project's representative.

Dr. Paul Boyd, who identified himself for the record and gave a residential address, described a shipping-container installation at a high school where students are already growing mushrooms intended for sale to local restaurants and markets. "It's an ongoing project where the students will be growing mushrooms that have already started it. Eventually, they will sell these to vendors, hopefully, the local restaurants," he said.

Committee members confirmed the contract exists and that the container and much of the work are already in place. Chair Gary Hogan said the contract amount was $250,000 and committee discussion indicated about $245,000 has been spent; staff said the remaining funds were likely intended for installation and incidental items and may be used if state allowances permit.

The committee did not act to approve the contract at the meeting; instead staff recommended and the committee agreed to discharge the item to the full board for its next meeting so the full board can review the authorization and any outstanding procurement documentation.

The committee's referral is recorded as a recommendation; final approval will require full-board action.
