The House adopted House Resolution 1445 commending the Georgia Building Authority and restoration teams for their work on the Georgia State Capitol. Representative Brent Cox highlighted a recent discovery made during renovations: structural steel stamped "Carnegie," which he said indicates the Capitol includes original Carnegie-manufactured steel.
Cox described walking the restoration area with officials and finding stamped steel in places not previously known. "The amazing part I find is that because of the decisions of this general assembly and our governor to spend the money on the renovation, we uncovered history that no one ever knew," Cox said on the floor, adding that "stamped on the structural steel... Carnegie." He noted that only a small number of state capitols of the same vintage still include Carnegie steel.
The House agreed to the committee report and adopted the resolution after a motion to order the previous question. Members were invited to join in a photo in the south standing room and to thank the Georgia Building Authority and contractors for the restoration work.
The resolution expresses support for continued historical preservation of the Capitol and commends the Georgia Building Authority's team and private contractors for their work and discoveries.
