The Shelton Board of Aldermen voted to authorize a contract with FieldTurf USA for a new all-weather synthetic turf field at Shelton High School.
Chair (speaker 4) presented the finance-committee recommendation and said the contract authorization would allow the city to begin construction on the existing lower grama field and permit the mayor to execute documents necessary to proceed. "Move for the recommendation of the finance committee to authorize the city of Shelton to enter contract with FieldTurf USA, begin the construction of a new all-weather synthetic turf field on the existing lower grama field at Shelton High School," the chair said as the motion was offered.
Board members discussed funding and alternates. The chair said the project is tied to two state grants, one for roughly $500,000 and another for about $50,000, and that the base bid was in the neighborhood of $1.3 million with optional add-ons (fencing, lighting, bleachers) to be considered later so the city would not forfeit grant money.
Mayor John Angliss urged approval, saying the city's share under current grant assumptions would be about 54% and the state would pay roughly 46%. The board voted by voice and the motion carried; members said they will return after July 1 to consider alternates and appropriations.
The authorization allows the administration to sign the contract and begin the procurement and preconstruction steps; the board did not appropriate the full alternate package at this meeting.
