West Windsor swears in new firefighters and EMTs; four members honored for life-saving CPR

Tim Lynch, chief of West Windsor Fire and Emergency Services, introduced new firefighters and emergency medical technicians at the township council meeting on March 30 and urged them to uphold the department’s legacy of competency and compassion. “This oath is not just about responding to emergencies. It’s about character and about integrity,” Lynch said.

Lynch read short biographies for the new hires, including firefighter Louis Depipa, firefighter Ryan Opagard, firefighter LaVar Wright, firefighter John Spirito, and firefighter Clifford (Cliff) Craft, and noted EMT hires such as Sarah Catano, Taylor Byrd and James Brown. The recruits were administered the oath of office by the municipal clerk and stood with family members for a ceremonial photograph.

The council also presented a certificate recognizing John Spirito, Rashawn Alvarez, Louis Depipa and EMT James Brown for their role in a Nov. 19, 2025 cardiac-arrest resuscitation that resulted in a successful CPR save. Lynch said the save “highlights the impact of preparation, training and teamwork.”

Council members congratulated the new public-safety employees and thanked department staff for ongoing training and service to the community. The ceremony included a brief recess for family photographs before the council resumed its regular agenda.

The council did not take formal policy action related to staffing at the meeting; the swearing-in and recognition were ceremonial items on the agenda.
