The Barstow Unified Board of Trustees heard details of a planned five‑year reclassification study for classified positions and an update that George has been appointed interim superintendent.
A district staff member said the district had presented its second interim report to the board and described the new interim appointment, saying, "He will stay true to a CSA," and stressing that "it takes a team" of certificated and classified staff to support students. The staff member said the district hopes the new appointee will maintain a strong relationship with classified employees.
Officials described the reclassification rollout as a five‑year rotation. The staff member said grounds, maintenance and warehouse are slated for the first year while trustees clarified that custodial roles are included in the initial round. The board has nominated a lead for the study and expects the review to begin within one or two weeks.
The staff member also flagged that the labor contract is currently open and that "health and welfare" remains a significant budget concern because rates were projected to rise; the speaker noted being on the benefits board gives advance notice of rate information.
The board did not take formal action on reclassification at the meeting; trustees were informed of the plan and timelines and will revisit details and any required budget changes in future sessions.
