The Lynwood Unified School District on March 12 paused to honor Coach Ellis Barfield for three decades of coaching and mentorship, then heard a string of student reports and two public comments.
Superintendent remarks recognized Barfield’s record — multiple CIF championships, college placements and a state runner‑up finish — and invited the coach and current student athletes to the dais for applause. Coach Barfield spoke to the board about mentoring young people, the role of sports in providing alternatives to gangs and drugs, and the pride he takes seeing former players become professionals and community leaders.
Students from multiple sites delivered board reports. Linwood High School’s student representative told the board that senior participation in financial aid work is at 88 percent with 353 submitted applications, citing a year‑over‑year increase and upcoming college decision day on April 30. Vista High’s ASB president reported graduations, assemblies on substance‑abuse prevention, site council budget approval and upcoming LPAC testing and an open house on March 24. The Lynwood Community Adult School reported new cohort and program milestones, including an HVAC inspection certificate completion.
In public comment, community member Evangelina Cruz urged board accountability if trustees consider raises: she said the community should expect more frequent school visits, faster responses to parent concerns and measurable improvements tied to any compensation increases. A student from Will Rogers Elementary, who identified himself as Lewis, asked for expanded GATE after‑school programming because the current classes “challenge my brain” and are fun.
The board also offered condolences for longtime Lynwood educators Robert and Polly Morris and announced their services. The meeting continued with the scheduled business, including the budget presentation.
