The Bridge City ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously Feb. 25 to decline a resolution that would permit creation of a district policy requiring every campus to provide students and employees an opportunity for prayer and the reading of religious texts on each school day.
Public commenter Scot Shaffer addressed the board in favor of students being allowed to pray at school and school events but said he opposed a state mandate on campuses and urged trustees to vote no on the proposed resolution. After public comment, Trustee Thad Hill moved to not adopt the resolution; Jerry Mclnnis seconded the motion. The motion carried with all trustees voting in favor of declining the resolution.
The agenda item referenced Senate Bill 11. During the discussion the board did not take further action to draft or adopt a district-wide mandate; the board’s unanimous vote was to decline the resolution presented at the meeting.
No trustee debate or amendments to the resolution were recorded in the minutes; the item concluded with the board’s formal vote to decline the proposed policy authorization.
