The Community Inclusion and Engagement Commission heard an overview March 26 of services at Richardson Senior Center and asked staff to provide membership metrics and follow-up information.
Jonathan Winters, recreation and older adult superintendent, and Susan Talbot, senior center manager, described services available to residents aged 50 and older, including tiered membership fees and a calendar of programming aimed at social connection. "Starting at age 50, you can come to our center," Talbot said, outlining resident and nonresident fee tiers and noting that the center offers daily activities such as mahjong, bridge and musical bingo as well as arts classes.
Winters and Talbot stressed that social events are central to the center
pproach. They pointed to weekly and monthly dances, an annual Thanksgiving luncheon served by city staff and council members, a senior prom and local and national trips organized for members. "Loneliness for seniors is really an epidemic," Winters said, explaining why staff prioritize connection-focused programming such as the "Let's Talk Military" discussion group for veterans.
Transportation and meal services drew particular attention. Talbot described the door-to-door ride program for Richardson residents 50 and older (50 ¢ one-way, $1 round trip), available Monday through Thursday from roughly 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM, and explained the center's reservation windows for doctor appointments and general trips. The center also operates an affordable lunch cafe with daily specials around $5 and sandwiches for about $3.50.
Commissioners pressed staff on operational details and outreach. A commissioner asked whether nonveterans may attend the veterans' discussion table; Talbot said the program prefers military participants but that visitors are sometimes welcomed and introduced. Commissioners also asked about volunteer screening; Talbot said a background-check process is being implemented but is not yet fully rolled out. On metrics, Winters said membership numbers are stored in the parks-and-recreation system and he will provide specific counts to the commission, noting he did not have a precise number at the meeting.
Members suggested ways to raise the center's visibility, including sharing portraits and personal profiles of seniors, deeper coordination with communications staff and targeted sponsor outreach to offset event costs. Greg, the parks-and-recreation liaison, confirmed the presentation materials are in the commissioners' packets and said staff can circulate copies and additional data on request.
The commission closed the discussion by thanking staff for the presentation and requesting follow-up metrics and a copy of the slide packet. Staff agreed to return membership counts and related details to the commission for future review.
