Board reviews first reading of hate‑speech policy and athletic code updates

On May 22 the Lake Stevens School District Board received a first reading of Policy #5585, the proposed Hate Speech and Bias Incident Policy, and a companion update to the Athletic Code that adds defined hate‑speech language and reporting/consequence guidance.

Dr. Monica Meadows, Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, said the policy provides definitions, response protocols and prevention measures, and that administrators and staff have received training in interrupting and reporting bias incidents. “Listening to students from historically marginalized communities … we understand that hate speech has a severe impact on the students and their ability to learn in safe and inclusive environments,” Meadows said.

Associate Principal Jason Pearson and Assistant Principal Sara Mack described Athletic Code changes that make expectations explicit year‑round, add hate‑speech provisions consistent with interrupting‑hate training, and plan coach training and family communication. The updated code will be in effect 365 days a year and takes effect July 2024, with coach training planned for the 2024–25 school year.

Directors praised the intent; Director Iseminger asked for stronger consequence language and Superintendent Ken D. Collins emphasized the need for administrators to be able to investigate incidents. The board did not adopt the policy at first reading; staff will return with final language for adoption at a later meeting.
