Senate proclaims March 2026 Arts Education Month; lawmakers welcome educators

The California State Senate adopted Senate Concurrent Resolution 147, proclaiming March 2026 as Arts Education Month and honoring arts educators and community organizations across the state.

Senator Allen, chair of the Joint Committee on the Arts and sponsor of the resolution, said arts education develops critical thinking, social‑emotional skills and career pathways, and urged colleagues to celebrate educators and practitioners who expand access to creative learning. "By remaining committed to making arts education programs accessible to all of our students, we're investing in the culturally rich communities and world‑class career opportunities that they will inherit," Allen said.

Senator Allen introduced Dr. Matthew Espinoza Castro, an assistant professor of education at Sacramento State and a member of the board of CREATE California, along with local arts leaders from organizations including Friends of Sacramento Arts and B Street Theater.

With no objections, the Senate used a unanimous roll call; the vote was recorded as 37 ayes, 0 noes, and the resolution was adopted.

SCR 147 is a ceremonial recognition intended to highlight arts education and does not appropriate funds. The resolution emphasizes the state's commitment to making arts education more accessible in school curricula and to supporting arts educators and community partners.
