The Barnesville City Council voted unanimously to provide up to $75,000 to support construction of a Boys & Girls Club facility that will serve youth ages 6–16 on the Lamar County Elementary School complex.
City Manager David K. Rose told the council the school board will furnish and maintain the building while staffing would be provided by the Boys and Girls Club organization, potentially affiliated with the Macon Boys and Girls Club. The city’s contribution, approved on May 6, 2019, came after years of local discussion among city, county and school partners.
Councilmember Sammie D. Shropshire, Jr., and others praised the collaborative effort; Mayor Banks noted the three local governments had been working together to enable the project. City records state the contribution was to come from proceeds of surplus-equipment sales handled by the assistant city manager.
What’s next: The city approved the contribution "not to exceed $75,000.00;" implementation steps and memoranda of understanding with partners were described in the meeting but will require follow-up between the city, school board and Boys & Girls Club operators.
