Commissioner Crystal Patterson asked the commission to pull item 5H so she could ask questions about the veterans committee appointments, saying she had not received application packets and wanted clarity on whether reappointments or new appointments were being proposed and whether District 3 was represented.
City Clerk Kimberly Dillon explained that the veterans committee is a commission‑appointed body (not district‑based), that some members had reapplied while four new applicants had also applied, and that past code changes were intended to help with chronic recruitment difficulties. Several public commenters, including veterans who serve on the committee, urged the commission to approve members and not limit participation.
The commission debated whether to defer for additional information or to table the entire list until the next meeting. Vice Mayor Marlyn D. Bolton moved to table the new appointments while allowing current members to continue serving; the motion passed 3–2 on a roll call vote. The city clerk said staff will provide clearer documentation about who is up for reappointment, which terms have expired, and the applicants’ district residency before the item returns to the dais.
Commissioner Patterson said her request was procedural: she asked that future appointment packages include applications or applicant contact information so commissioners can confirm representation and vet candidates prior to votes.
The tabling preserves the veterans committee’s ability to meet in the interim while giving commissioners time to review application materials and discuss changes to the appointment language and notification process before final action.
