The Eagan City Council on March 17 recognized Fire Chief Hugo Searle as he retires after 34 years in the fire service, including nearly five years leading the city’s department.
Diane Miller, who led the presentation, credited Searle with guiding Eagan’s transition to a full-time professional staffing model, improving response-time metrics and creating a cadet program to recruit and train the next generation of firefighters. "By tracking metrics and service delivery, he successfully lowered response times significantly," Miller told the council, adding that Searle emphasized professional development and diversity within the department.
Chief Hugo Searle thanked council members, staff, fellow firefighters and his family, calling the job "the greatest privilege of my career." He reflected on difficult and memorable calls and said he leaves the department "strong" and confident its values will continue.
Mayor Fields and multiple council members praised Searle’s leadership and the cultural changes instituted under his tenure, noting the department’s increased professionalism and community focus. A plaque was presented to Searle during the meeting.
The recognition took place at the start of the council’s regular March 17 meeting; the council then moved on to its consent agenda and subsequent redevelopment business.
