Meisner autonomous shuttle pilot reports 93% autonomous uptime; city seeks NHTSA approval for expanded route

City public works staff provided an operational update on the Meisner autonomous shuttle pilot (Mica) and reported high levels of autonomous operation and no accidents.

Public Works Director Zach Beer and contractor representatives said the vehicle has completed approximately 200 miles of testing with an average loop time of about 12 minutes, and that the system has operated autonomously roughly 93% of the time. Rider totals and stop‑level usage patterns are being used to optimize stops and hours of service.

A contractor representative emphasized the weight of pedestrian activity and the vehicle’s ability to react to unpredictable pedestrian movements; staff said only one emergency stop had been reported to date (caused by a ball on the route) and no accidents had occurred. "That 93% autonomous operation is outstanding from the industry," the staff presentation noted.

The city said it submitted an application to the U.S. Department of Transportation (NHTSA) for an extended 2‑mile route that would connect Meisner Park down to Roll‑on Place; staff expects federal review to take several months and anticipates expanded operation in 2026 if cleared.

Why it matters: The pilot is presented as a testbed for autonomous microtransit in downtown Boca Raton and a tool to help bridge gaps in local connectivity. The data collected will inform whether and how to expand services to better connect downtown nodes and reduce short car trips.
