TAMARAC, Fla. — The Tamarac City Commission opened its March 11 meeting with a celebration of Women’s History Month, presenting proclamations and the City of Tamarac Community Hero Medal of Honor to four women whose volunteer and business work leaders commissioners said strengthens the city.
Vice Mayor Marlyn D. Bolton presented the first proclamation and described the event as a chance to "give you your flowers while you're still alive and well and healthy and strong," calling on the community to recognize local leaders now rather than later. Bolton also noted the city’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg Commission on the Status of Women as one of the organizers.
Honorees included Dr. Sharetta (Sharita) Remicki, recognized for work in maternal and child health and equity; Pastor Michelle Alexander, lauded for violence-prevention and mentorship efforts; Sharon Jacobs, cited for senior-community leadership and stewardship of neighborhood reserves; and Seema (Sima) Lakani, acknowledged for founding Parkside Memory Care. Recipients spoke briefly from the dais, thanking the commission and reflecting on local service. "It really makes my heart feel... to be able to help people from before they were born up into the... years," Dr. Remicki said during her remarks.
Mayor Michelle j Gomez and commissioners praised Park and Recreation staff and other city teams for staging the event, and the commission took a short recess for photos before resuming the regular agenda.
The proclamations and awards were ceremonial recognitions and did not carry regulatory or budgetary action; however, commissioners noted the events are part of a continuing city emphasis on volunteer-led civic engagement.
The commission returned to its regular agenda after a 10-minute break and moved into reports from the Broward Sheriff's Office and the city manager’s office.
