TAMARAC, Fla. — The Tamarac City Commission voted 3–2 on March 11 to table a resolution to appoint 10 members to the city’s Veterans Affairs Committee, after debate over how applicants were recruited and whether commissioners had adequate information about district representation.
Commissioner Crystal Patterson said she had not received applications or the background information she needed to confirm that District 3 would be represented, and asked for a delay so commissioners could review applicants and improve outreach. "I would have loved to pick up the phone and give a phone call," Patterson said, adding she wanted to ensure the city’s veterans are equitably represented and that the appointment process is transparent.
City Clerk Kimberly Dillon explained the appointments process to the commission: the veterans committee is commission‑appointed (not district‑based), the board has historically struggled to recruit members, and past practice has been to place applicants on the agenda for reappointment or new appointment once applications are received. Dillon said some members had reapplied while four names on the current resolution were new.
Public commenters, many of them veterans, urged the commission not to thwart the committee’s work. "Let's let these people proceed," one resident said, noting that veterans’ ceremonies and commemorations depend on an active committee.
Vice Mayor Marlyn D. Bolton moved to table the item to the next meeting, with language preserving the current members' ability to operate and to add any vetted new applicants after additional vetting. The motion passed on roll call 3–2 (yes: Bolton, Patterson, Daniel; no: Mayor Michelle j Gomez, Maury Wright). The clerk recorded that the commission will return this item with clearer backup materials and application materials days before the next meeting.
The commission and staff also agreed to review code language for the veterans committee and whether additional appointment information should be included in the resolution packet. No formal appointments were confirmed at the March 11 meeting.
