Gunnison City Council on March 19 approved two agreements with Sanpete County for fire protection and vehicle extrication response but chose to table a third agreement that establishes county emergency response standard operating guidelines tied to dispatch.
Fire Chief Jett described the three agreements and emphasized that the department provides first-response services outside city limits under the county contract. He noted the extrication agreement formalizes responsibility for technical rescue when some departments historically lacked proper tools.
Council members expressed support for the two operational agreements but raised concerns about committing to dispatch arrangements while the county considers changes to dispatch funding and staffing. Dennis, the city staff presenter, recommended tabling the dispatch-related agreement until the council had better clarity on the county's dispatch proposals and potential billing mechanisms.
Council approved the fire protection and vehicle-extrication agreements by voice vote and later voted to table the standard operating guidelines tied to dispatch until discussions with the county resolve outstanding issues. Chief Jett said tabling that item would not harm operations and echoed council's request for clearer county-level plans.
Council also discussed the fire department's new engine arriving in May and plans for a community celebration to mark its arrival.
