The Iron County Commission voted March 9 to forgive $7,489.46 in delinquent property taxes on parcel APN A-941-3 for an 81-year-old resident whose medical and caregiving circumstances prevented a timely abatement application. County Clerk Jon Whittaker presented the applicant's circumstances and recommended forgiveness, noting the applicant had previously received abatements in 2019 and 2025 and has limited income from Social Security and a former-spouse pension.
Whittaker told the commission the full tax amount due was $7,489.46 and that paying the balance would require roughly $662 a month — about a quarter of the applicant's monthly income. Commissioner Michael Bleak said he would support deferral for health reasons; the commission moved first to defer and then amended the motion to forgive the taxes in full. The commission recorded the vote: Bleak Aye; Robinson Aye; Cozzens Absent.
Whittaker noted that penalties and interest were still owed and that staff would follow county abatement procedures for any further administrative steps. The commission's action relieves the principal tax obligation for the parcel but does not eliminate any statutory penalties or interest pending administrative calculation and notice.
