The Rhode Island Senate on March 26 adopted several ceremonial resolutions recognizing community organizations and public-health observances.
Senate Resolution welcoming the Narragansett Council, Scouting America, to the State House and celebrating Scouting Month was moved and described by Senator Acosta and supported by other senators who introduced local scouts and Tim McCandless, Scout Executive and CEO of Narragansett Council Scouting America. Senator Acosta spoke of his Eagle Scout experience and the organization’s community service.
Chairwoman Murray introduced a resolution proclaiming March 2026 as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. The clerk read findings citing estimates from the American Cancer Society and the Rhode Island Department of Health on incidence and the importance of screening. Chairwoman Murray urged residents age 45 and older to undergo recommended screenings and cited prior legislative work on colorectal screening coverage by the late Mary Ellen Goodwin. The resolution was adopted unanimously.
A resolution celebrating the 50th anniversary of Sojourner House of Rhode Island recognized the organization’s statewide services for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking, and noted Sojourner House’s work on housing solutions and trauma-informed services. Chairwoman Murray introduced Vanessa Volz, CEO, and Kirsty Ilo, former chair and board member, who were acknowledged in the gallery. Murray also announced the nonprofit’s 24/7 hotline as provided during remarks.
All three resolutions were adopted by voice vote (the clerk recorded the resolutions as adopted). The transcript records introductions and expressions of appreciation but no formal debate or dissent on these ceremonial items.
