Sarah Ruby, representing Richmond FC LLC, presented petition BZA7‑2026 on March 11 seeking three sign variances for a project at 15 East Main: place a projecting sign 13 feet from the primary entrance (vs. 10 feet allowed), allow a bottom height of 17 feet above grade (vs. 14 feet), and increase allowed area to 48.75 square feet (vs. 20 square feet permitted by UDO Article 5.783(b)). Ruby said the mounting structure necessitates shifting the sign and that the taller placement reduces light spill to adjacent units.
Planning staff reviewed the application, found four written letters in favor, no health or safety objections from consulted departments, and recommended approval. Staff's findings say a 13‑foot setback and 17‑foot bottom height are necessary for structural mounting and to preserve the sign's aesthetics and function on the building face. Staff also recorded a written commitment that the projecting sign must be approved by the Board of Works before infrastructure and development issues a permit.
No members of the public spoke at the hearing on the sign petition. On a motion based on the staff report and the written commitment, the board approved BZA7‑2026 by recorded vote.
Next step: the petitioner must obtain Board of Works approval for the projecting sign prior to receiving an infrastructure and development permit, and then proceed with permit application and installation in accordance with the conditions set by the Board of Works and infrastructure staff.
