The Rhode Island House Committee on Education voted to pass House Resolution 7483, which extends the reporting and expiration date of a special legislative commission studying an anti‑littering education program for elementary students, and approved House Bill 7733, which amends the composition and appointment provisions of the Regional School Building Committee.
Chairman McNamara moved to hold several other bills for further study at the start of the meeting and explained that a vote to hold “does not signify any position on the merits,” but gives the committee time to review written and verbal testimony. The committee then took and recorded votes that resulted in passage of the two measures described above.
The resolution on the anti‑littering education commission extends the panel’s reporting timeline so members can complete work on program recommendations for Rhode Island public elementary schools. Representative Carter said the school‑building committee amendment, enacted in 1965 and updated by HB 7733, had broad local support and changes reflect agreed‑upon appointments and cost allocations.
Both measures were carried by voice vote and the chair announced the motions passed. The committee moved on to scheduled public hearings on other bills and accepted written materials for the record as provided by witnesses.
The committee adjourned after completing its agenda; the committee will meet again as scheduled for subsequent committee business and hearings.
