The Iowa Senate used its opening minutes for a series of floor announcements and introductions before adjourning for a short recess.
The presiding officer recognized several senators who announced events and highlights from their districts. Senator Reichman reminded members of a NASCAR legislative reception from 5 to 8 p.m. featuring driver Ross Chastain and noted the Iowa Speedway’s economic boost during the Cup season. Senator Zumba reminded colleagues of a 6 p.m. memorial service for former colleagues and announced Iowa Corn Growers Association Day on the Hill, including an ice cream truck; Zumba stated that Iowa corn has a nearly $14,000,000,000 impact and up to $20,000,000,000 of total economic activity and said corn accounts for nearly 13% of Iowa’s GDP.
Senator Townsend introduced about 25 members of Leadership Dubuque who were in the gallery and announced a Dubuque reception and a building and construction trades reception at Prairie Meadows. Senator Sweeney told members to arrive slightly early at 1:00 p.m. for an escort of pioneer lawmakers into the House chamber.
Following those announcements, Senator Clemish moved that the Senate recess until 12:30 p.m. The presiding officer called for a voice vote; the motion was approved by voice and the Senate recessed until 12:30 p.m.
The announcements focused on constituent and industry engagement events on the Capitol grounds and on ceremonial observances; no policy votes or committee referrals were taken on the matters discussed during announcements.
