Jane Coopersmith, speaking as EDC staff, updated commissioners on changes at Monroe County Community School Corporation requiring some form of workplace experience across diploma tracks and on a newly formed advisory council called "Strong Schools, Strong Community." She said the council will include about 40 community members and an application is available; she offered an email contact: jane.coopersmith@bloomington.in.gov.
Coopersmith described the change as an opportunity for the EDC to help connect students to internships and placements. Commissioners raised practical concerns about implementation: transportation barriers, how hours and experiences would be tracked by schools, and whether the requirement imposes large administrative burdens. One commissioner characterized the mandate as an "unfunded mandate," saying it will create more administrative work for MCCSC.
Commissioners also discussed how the work requirement could be leveraged for economic development by matching student placements to local business needs. Coopersmith noted that some internships may be counted remotely and mentioned recent visits by students from Hoosier Hills Career Center to city facilities as an example of local engagement.
Next steps discussed included bringing MCCSC items to the EDC when relevant opportunities arise and exploring ways the EDC could support placements and retention of entry-level local positions.
