Board authorizes commissioner to attend mediation in pending county litigation

Union County's county attorney briefed commissioners on a pending legal case and recommended the board designate a commissioner to attend mediation and negotiate in good faith, with attorneys present to advise.

After discussion, the board agreed to give Commissioner McNeal a right of first refusal to serve as the board's liaison at the mediation; the board recorded its consensus and the motion was placed on the minutes. Attorney Wade said any proposed resolution reached at mediation would be returned to the full board for final action.

Commissioners emphasized that the designated commissioner would not make a final decision unilaterally but would negotiate in good faith and bring any proposed settlement back to the board for action. The board recorded unanimous support for the designation.
