Fairfield County department heads offered several updates at the March 17 meeting: a Developmental Disabilities (DD) presentation, a Job and Family Services (JFS) preview of a statewide SNAP error-rate review and an update about a denied waiver affecting an Ohio University Workforce Center program.
Dr. David Uhl, superintendent of the Fairfield County Board of Developmental Disabilities, presented the DD Community Impact Report during DD Awareness Month and said the Board supported over 1,800 individuals in 2025, including 477 children ages birth to 3. Dr. Uhl said a newly added translator on the DD website was used about 40,000 times in its first year and played a video titled "House of Many Journeys." He said DD is working on assistive-technology coordination and revenue sustainability through focus groups.
Corey Clark, director of Fairfield County Job and Family Services, briefed commissioners on the statewide SNAP error‑rate review. Clark said the county will receive a sample list of 20 cases in early April to determine the local error rate and that "each county must do the assessment manually due to issues with the state system," adding that the county’s sampled error rate does not equate directly to a statewide rate.
Rick Szabrak, Economic & Workforce Development Director, reported that the Ohio Department of Higher Education denied a waiver that would have allowed an Ohio University engineering associate-degree program at the Workforce Center to continue as approved; the program will award certificates but the credits will not roll into the degree automatically and Ohio University must create individual study plans for affected students.
Other items: Treasurer Jim Bahnsen and Recorder Lisa McKenzie reported progress on electronic credit-card processing; Utilities Director Tony Vogel reported that utilities maintained services during recent storms and are working with the Village of Millersport on wastewater design; Sheriff Alex Lape described a prosecution in the Court of Common Pleas and credited Harcum House for assistance.
Resolutions on the consent agenda included JFS memo expenditures for birth certificate costs and a CDBG PY2024 Village of Bremen pool-improvement award to Cooper Concrete Services LLC; all consent votes were recorded as unanimous.
The Board entered two executive sessions later in the day (pending/imminent court action and security matters) and then adjourned. No formal public comments were recorded in the meeting minutes.
