Flat Rock reports 99.6% property tax collection; budget workshop set after meeting

At the Village of Flat Rock’s agenda workshop on April 1, Mayor Nick Weedman reported that the village had collected $1,678,017.80 for the 2023–24 property tax year, equal to 99.6% of amounts billed, and that $6,844.77 remained outstanding.

The March 28 collection report, presented by Weedman (the report lists him as Finance Officer), shows billed property taxes of $1,676,489.67 plus $1,528.13 in interest and notes 13 owners holding 26 delinquent properties. The report compares current collections to the prior year (99.7% on the same date in 2023). Weedman said one parcel in Kenmure is scheduled for sale on May 1 and could affect the village’s goal of reaching 100% collection. He also said the village is considering garnishment of bank accounts and publication of delinquent accounts in April or May as collection tools.

Council Member Toner, in his capacity as the village’s Budget Officer, asked fellow council members to submit proposed budget figures for the 2024–25 fiscal year and confirmed a Budget Workshop will follow the agenda meeting to refine numbers ahead of the April 11 council meeting.

The finance report also recorded that the village paid its three fire departments $419,855 on March 28. Council did not take further formal action on delinquent accounts at the workshop; Weedman indicated staff will pursue the next steps discussed in the report.

Next steps: council will continue budget preparations at the Budget Workshop scheduled immediately after the agenda meeting, and the full council will consider budget proposals and any formal collection actions at upcoming meetings.
