Renoir Bui, chief of the CapMetro Police Department, briefed the board March 23 on public‑safety and security initiatives and described a three‑pronged strategy that mixes customer assistance, directed patrols and traditional police response.
“We have a 3 pronged public safety approach,” Bui said, explaining that the department uses visible directed patrols and targeted high‑visibility deployments in hotspots such as Rundberg & Lamar, Westgate Transit Center, Tech Ridge and Republic Square. Bui said CapMetro PD currently has approximately 15 patrol officers and that the agency aims to grow the force (the strategic plan targets just over 40 officers by 2030).
Bui provided operations metrics the department has tracked since last June: roughly 196 total offenses, 3,449 calls for service and 75 arrests. He also told the board that CapMetro joined the joint terrorism task force last month and that the department will conduct training with Austin PD SWAT to prepare for large‑scale incidents.
Board members asked for details about directed patrols, recruitment timelines and how the department uses camera systems as a force multiplier; Bui and staff said cameras and partnerships with APD are central to the department's strategy.
The board received the report and asked staff to continue coordination and recruitment activity.
