The War Acres City Council on March 17 approved a six‑month trial recycling program using a 22‑yard enclosed roll‑off container provided by Waste Connections.
Bridal Lemoine of Waste Connections explained the vendor could supply a covered container with slots for commingled recycling (paper, plastics, glass) and haul it for about $250 per pickup plus a processing fee roughly $130 per ton. Staff and councilmembers focused on contamination risk (food‑soiled materials), the need to monitor loads to avoid sending contaminated loads to the landfill, volunteer capacity to staff the collection site, and likely pickup frequency. Current estimates from volunteers were that the container would require service roughly every 1–2 months.
Council approved a six‑month trial, to be monitored by public works and volunteers; staff said Waste Connections has no long‑term contract requirement for the trial and the city can cancel if contamination or costs become unmanageable. Council members suggested educating residents about rinsing containers and using clean bags to reduce contamination.
What’s next: Public works will pilot placement and schedule for pickups, track tonnage and contamination incidents, and report back to council before the trial concludes so the council can decide whether to expand, continue or end the program.
