Committee recommends mayor sign monarch-pledge after staff review

Chair Regina Phillips introduced a letter from schoolchildren asking the mayor to sign the National Wildlife Federation’s monarch pledge. Troy Moon, Director of Sustainability, told the committee the pledge’s actions largely align with existing city programs including organic land-care practices, urban meadows with milkweed plantings and community workshops.

"We do many of them already as a city," Moon said, listing parks meadow projects and milkweed plantings at several city sites. Moon described proposed homeowner guidance and outreach work planned for the summer to encourage native-plant esplanade gardens.

After brief public comment — including a supportive comment from a community activist who has worked on monarch protection for four years — the committee moved, seconded and voted to recommend that the mayor sign the pledge. Staff said a recommendation from the committee would be appropriate, and the item does not require full council action to forward a recommendation to the mayor.

The committee’s recommendation directs staff to deliver the endorsement to the mayor and continue public outreach and habitat-guidance activities this season.
