At the March 18 Public Safety meeting DPW provided several operational updates: the RFP for the Union Street pedestrian crosswalk will go active next month, school-zone signage for permanently closed schools will be removed this spring, and two new regulatory speed-limit signs will be installed on Washington Street.
Miss Norris said the crosswalk equipment is in place but not yet active because the push-button alignment and procurement steps must be completed. "It is in place. It's not active at the moment… they still need to align the crosswalk with the push button and the RFPs," she said, adding the crosswalk "will be functioning next month."
On school signage, DPW said crews plan to remove school-zone signs for schools that have closed once ground conditions allow spring work. DPW also reported it is working to place two new regulatory speed-limit signs along Washington Street.
A councillor asked DPW to provide an update on pothole repairs for Old Gonic Road after constituents reported extensive surface damage; the councilor also asked staff to review signal timing at the Union River/North Main intersection after occasional congestion during peak event nights. DPW did not provide exact repair dates or a precise timetable for signal timing changes during the meeting; the committee requested those details at a future meeting.
