Committee advances rural oncology training fix to general register

Representative Baker brought House File 4003 to the committee as a technical fix to broaden eligibility for a rural oncology clinical experience pilot. Stephanie Oman, a volunteer with the Rural Cancer Institute, testified the pilot (based at Lakewood Health System in Staples) places oncology fellows, residents and advanced practice students in rural practices; widening eligibility to include clinicians trained outside Minnesota will help build the rural oncology workforce.

Oman said the program is modeled on the University of Minnesota's Rural Physician Associate Program (RPAP) and argued rural exposure increases the likelihood clinicians will practice in rural communities. Members voiced support for the change, described the pilot as a meaningful investment in rural cancer care workforce development, and the committee moved HF4003 to the general register by voice vote.

The committee did not change funding in this session; members said they expect to continue work with the sponsoring offices and agencies as the bill advances on the House floor.
