Committee updates Hennepin County medical‑examiner statute and advances amended bill to General Register

Chair Freiberg presented House File 42‑41 to update selection and board membership language for the Hennepin County Medical Examiner. Sean Wilson, director of operations for the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office, testified that statutory language dating to earlier revisions references professional organizations that do not exist and that no chief medical examiner has been appointed under the current statutory vetting process.

Wilson said Hennepin County conducts roughly one‑third of Minnesota’s death investigations and that preserving an independent, expert vetting process is important for high‑profile and complex cases. The bill updates the required board membership to include representatives from the University of Minnesota Medical School, Hennepin Healthcare and the medical examiner’s office and clarifies selection mechanics.

Committee members adopted local amendments (A1, A3 and A2) addressing Rochester School Board election language and 3 Rivers Park District economic interest filings, then moved the amended bill to the General Register by voice vote. Members said the changes are intended to modernize obsolete references and ensure a viable selection process for future chief medical examiners.
