Senators move to rename state office building for Melissa Hortman and honor Carrie Dietzic

Senators presented two separate bills to rename the State Office Building on March 17. Senator Hoffman sponsored both measures. For Senate File 3899, she said the A4 amendment corrected technical language and then described Melissa Hortman’s long service and bipartisan reputation. Jody Anderson Wilhafter, a Brooklyn Park resident, testified she had gathered a petition of 2,268 signatures supporting the renaming and described Hortman’s statewide impact and the need for a lasting memorial.

Senator Hoffman also presented Senate File 4338 honoring Carrie Dietzic, recounting Dietzic’s community service in northeast Minneapolis and leadership roles, including as majority leader. Several members, including delegates from the Minneapolis delegation, praised Dietzic’s dedication and urged passage. Both bills were advanced by the committee and referred to Finance by voice votes.
