Staff updated the commission on park sponsorships and a proposed mural at Primrose funded by Memorial Hermann.
The city’s parks staff said three of four scoreboards at the park are already claimed and that several organizations have expressed interest in naming rights for the amphitheater and fields. Regarding the Primrose concessions building, staff said Memorial Hermann is interested in sponsoring a mural that staff estimated would cost $20,000 and that Memorial Hermann proposed splitting payment across four years at $5,000 annually.
“We would obviously discuss it as a commission and make sure it's what the city thinks is best,” staff said, noting that the city would likely pay the artist up front and be reimbursed by the sponsor. Commissioners asked what sponsor signage would look like; staff said the sponsor’s name would likely appear on a plaque rather than as an advertising mural and that legal would prepare standard sponsorship contracts to prevent sponsors from withdrawing without penalty.
Some commissioners urged requesting a larger up‑front payment from sponsors to avoid cash‑flow pressure on the parks budget, and others asked staff to obtain firm artist quotes and a payment schedule before the item goes to City Council for final approval.
Why it matters: Sponsorships can offset parks costs but require contracts and budget planning if the city must front costs. Commissioners asked staff to confirm artist costs, contract protections and whether split payments are acceptable before council consideration.
Next steps: Staff will negotiate terms with Memorial Hermann and other prospective sponsors, prepare sponsorship forms/contracts and bring the item to the City Council for approval or denial.
