The Calhoun County Commission on April 11 approved a series of actions on property conditions across the county, voting unanimously to abate nuisances at 10 addresses, dismiss nuisance findings on 10 other properties after corrective action, and declare nine additional properties as public nuisances.
Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize presented the lists of properties recommended for abatement, dismissal, and declaration. Commissioner Terry Howell moved to abate the 10 properties as recommended; Commissioner Fred Wilson seconded and the motion carried by unanimous voice vote of the commissioners present.
At the meeting Sandra Evans, speaking on behalf of the owner of 51 Johnny Street in Anniston, said the owner "is cleaning up the nuisance and the property is being sold." Separately, John Escareno, representing 133 Glade Road W., told the commission he had completed the needed work and "appreciated Mr. Mize’s help in this matter." The commission dismissed the nuisance finding for that property on a motion by Commissioner Lee Patterson and a second from Commissioner Wilson.
Mize also recommended declaring nine properties as nuisances; owners had been notified but were not present. Commissioner Howell moved to declare the properties as nuisances, Commissioner Wilson seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
All three agenda items were approved by voice vote with Commissioners Shears, Wilson, Howell and Patterson present. Resolutions for the abatements and declarations were filed in the meeting record.
