Brook Park — The Brook Park City Council met for its 2026 organizational session and approved a slate of leadership roles, committee assignments and board representatives Monday evening.
Council President Salvatore opened the meeting and called the roll before members recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Early business included a motion to reorder the agenda that the council approved before moving to appointments.
Carol Johnson was nominated and confirmed to serve as clerk of council. After the roll-call vote, the new clerk acknowledged the appointment. The council also moved to retain Michelle as assistant clerk in the same part‑time capacity she held last term; the motion carried on a roll‑call vote.
The council elected Councilman Steve Roberts as council president pro tem. Salvatore called for nominations and, after a roll‑call vote, Roberts was declared pro tem; Salvatore noted Roberts received six votes with one abstention. "Congratulations, Steve," Salvatore said after the result was announced.
Salvatore then announced committee assignments for the year. He said many members would remain in their previous roles but noted the council might reassign seats midterm. Assignments included: Aviation Environmental (chair Ford, co‑chair Gonzales, member Poindexter); Appeals (chair Mancini, co‑chair Roberts, member DeFore); Finance (chair Scott, co‑chair Mancini, member McCorkle); Legislative (chair Roberts, co‑chair McCorkle, member Scott); Planning (chair Scott, co‑chair Poindexter, member Roberts); Recreation (chair McCorkle, co‑chair DeFore, member Gonzales); Safety (chair Poindexter, co‑chair Scott, member Mancini); Service (chair Gonzales, co‑chair Mancini, member Scott).
The council also approved several external appointments. Councilman Mancini was named Brook Park’s representative to the Southwest General Health Center; supporters praised his regular attendance and reporting. Mayor Orcutt recommended moving Ray Barr from the Board of Zoning Appeals to the civil service commission; Orcutt said Barr’s experience with the zoning board made him a strong candidate and urged the council to approve the transfer. A roll‑call vote approved the mayor’s recommendation.
Councilman McCorkle was retained as the city’s representative to the Board of Education; during that roll call McCorkle recorded an abstention. Councilman Dufour was approved to represent Brook Park on the Technology and Innovation Council (Dufour registered an abstention during the roll call).
On process matters, members urged clearer advance notice for major amendments to legislation so colleagues would not be presented with significant changes on the floor without time to review them. Law Director Horvath recommended that proposed amendments be submitted in writing and distributed by the clerk via email to improve efficiency while preserving public deliberation requirements.
The meeting concluded after a motion to adjourn; the president declared the session adjourned at 6:27 p.m.
