The Heard County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously March 15 to rezone property on Mahaley Road from Agriculture to Rural Development, following a brief public hearing.
At the hearing, Nicholas Harvey of 110 Southern Trace, Senoia, told the board he wants to build a home on the parcel "either for himself or to sell." No other members of the public offered opposition during the hearing, and Chairman Lee Boone closed the public comment period after Mr. Harvey spoke.
Commissioner Gwen Caldwell moved to approve the rezone; Commissioner Larry Hooks seconded, and the board approved the request without recorded opposition.
The board also handled routine business during the meeting, including unanimous approval of minutes from Feb. 15, 2021. Later in the meeting commissioners voted to enter executive session to discuss possible litigation and, upon returning to open session, authorized County Attorney Michael Hill to evaluate options and report back at the next meeting.
Votes at a glance: approval of minutes (motion Hammond, second Perry) — unanimous; Mahaley Road rezone (motion Caldwell, second Hooks) — unanimous; vote to enter executive session (motion Hammond, second Perry) — unanimous; adjournment (motion Caldwell, second Hooks) — unanimous.
The rezone was recorded as approved on the meeting agenda; staff will reflect the board's action in the county zoning records. No timetable for development or additional permits was specified during the meeting.
