After debate, Vermilion council extends Ward 1 vacancy application deadline to Jan. 9

Councilors spent a lengthy portion of the organization meeting debating how the city should fill a Ward 1 vacancy and whether the previously set application deadline and methods of notice were sufficient.

Councilmember (unnamed on the record) criticized the prior administration’s handling of the posting and argued the vacancy was not adequately publicized. Others said applicants had been given standard notice and that extending the window further was unlikely to produce new qualified candidates. Supporters of an extension said holidays and delays could have kept willing applicants from applying and urged the new council to give the public a fair chance to respond.

After discussion the council agreed to extend the Ward 1 posting, require applicants to submit resumes or expressions of interest, and set a firm submission deadline of noon on Jan. 9 (electronic delivery or drop‑off to city hall). The clerk was instructed to post the notice on the city website and the city’s Facebook page and to permit council members to share the post. Council members also indicated they would interview candidates at the Jan. 12 meeting and may act then.

Positions of the mayor and several council members differed during debate: one council member urged an expedited selection at the Monday meeting, while another asked for a brief extension and an extra advertisement cycle in the local paper. The council’s final motion set the Jan. 9 deadline and clarified the submission method and publicity channels.
