The Floyd County Council voted to pay a $107,001.72 invoice for body armor required by statute and debated where to charge the expense and how to fund planned patrol vehicle purchases.
A deputy speaking for the sheriff’s office described several grant proposals (body‑worn cameras and a stop‑arm enforcement program) and outlined the body‑armor invoice. Council members questioned whether those purchases should have been budgeted and where the county should draw funds. The deputy stated that the county “are obligated to do this by statute” when discussing the need to purchase body armor for officers and related staff; the council ultimately approved paying the $107,001.72 from GO bond proceeds (item 9B).
Members also discussed vehicle procurement: staff reported two bids for fully outfitted patrol vehicles around $60,000 each and said a target of about 10 patrol cars (plus one detective vehicle) was being considered. The council reviewed remaining balances in the jail vehicle line (about $1.242 million remaining after prior spend), discussed commissary funds as an option, and agreed to revisit vehicle funding and procurements later after clarifying appropriations and outstanding bills.
Next steps: the council authorized the immediate invoice payment from GO bond proceeds and directed staff to return with clear funding options and timetable for vehicle purchases.
