Maine Senate confirms three judicial nominees during floor session

The Maine Senate on March 11 confirmed three judicial nominees after floor debate and roll-call votes.

The Joint Standing Committee on Judiciary had recommended Andrew Lozotto of Dover-Foxcroft for appointment as a district court judge. Senators who spoke in favor cited his legal background, including indigent defense and appellate work. Following a roll-call vote the Senate sustained the committee's recommendation and the nomination was confirmed.

The Senate next considered the nomination of Sean Osipka of Belfast for appointment as a superior court justice. Supporters described his service on the district court, community standing and judicial temperament. After debate the Senate sustained the committee's recommendation and confirmed the nomination.

The chamber also considered the recommendation for the Honorable Harold L. Stewart II of Bangor for appointment as an active retired justice of the Superior Court. Senator Carney praised Justice Stewart's lengthy service and asked colleagues to let the nomination go through; the Senate sustained the committee's recommendation and confirmed the appointment.

Senator Carney said of the nominees: "I just rise to share a few insights into the character he will get lessons from, in wielding a hammer... I think that his dedication will elevate the judicial branch in Maine." Senator Stuart the Third offered a personal tribute to his father and celebrated his career.

The secretary was directed to inform the Speaker of the House of the Senate's actions following each confirmation.
