Community Services Department staff presented a summary of current and upcoming parks and recreation projects and how they tie to the county’s integrated master plan and ADA transition plan. Staff emphasized consultant coordination across adjacent projects and said project phasing and County Council budget approvals determine which items move forward.
Staff highlighted two playground projects—37th Street Play Lot and Pinon Park—both of which are on schedule to meet contract completion by April 30. Staff also announced a ribbon-cutting schedule for those projects: May 5 at 10:30 a.m. at 37th Street and 11:30 a.m. at Pinon Park.
The presentation covered a broader project list (items through 2033), examples such as Brewer Arena and San Ildefonso, and operational details like a temporarily offline Ashley Pond waterfall pump (recently replaced and restarted). Staff addressed a social-media concern about a removed playground rocket, saying the rocket was taken down for sandblasting and repainting after a community color survey and that it is stored and being prepared for reinstallation.
Staff also noted that the Community Services Division averages about "4,000,000 annually" for ADA improvements across projects and encouraged board members and the public to attend upcoming public engagement meetings: Grand Canyon play lot (March 16, 5:30 p.m., virtual), North Mesa picnic grounds (March 19, 5:37 p.m., Fuller Lodge and online) and Bio Canyon Trailhead (March 24, 5:30 p.m., Fuller Lodge and virtual).
Why it matters: These projects are the tangible outcomes of multi-year planning and influence public access to parks, playground safety and ADA accessibility. The schedule, funding note and consultant coordination items provide residents and board members clarity about timelines and where to offer input.
Next steps: Staff will continue posting meeting recordings, tabulated comment lists and project updates on the project pages and will support consultant coordination where adjacent projects overlap.
