Residents urge permanent medication disposal site and promote senior center trips

During public comment the council heard two community items. Leslie Navarro, representing Help Line Youth Counseling and the Southeast Community Alliance Coalition (CECA), urged the city to partner with the "Let's Make a Difference" campaign to expand safe medication disposal in Commerce. Navarro said the city of more than 12,000 residents currently has no permanent disposal site and asked the city to register for National Take Back Day on April 25, 2026 and to collaborate at city events to increase disposal access.

Navarro said her organization has partnered with local pharmacies and neighboring cities on take‑back events and that lack of easy disposal increases the risk of accidental or intentional access by teens or visitors. She asked staff to follow up; the mayor asked staff to contact her by the phone number on her speaker slip and staff said they would follow up this week.

Yvonne Sandoval, president of a senior club at the senior center, announced two upcoming senior trips in April and praised city‑sponsored painting classes led by a visiting artist. Sandoval said classes are "beaming with happiness" and thanked the council and staff for supporting lifelong creativity.
