During the public‑request period on March 11, Plantation resident Dennis Conklin urged the council to limit redevelopment of the former Plantation General Hospital site to three stories and criticized affordability calculations for Midtown redevelopment, saying rents and ownership costs would not be financially feasible for typical households.
Conklin gave numerical examples: he calculated that a $3,325 monthly rent would equate to a $159,600 annual take‑home pay under the 25%‑of‑take‑home rule and that ownership costs including HOA fees could require $248,880 in annual take‑home pay. "This is the definition that's not affordable," Conklin said, urging the council to reconsider the redevelopment scale on the east side and along State Road 7.
Conklin also made politically charged statements, saying "CAIR, the Council on American Islamic Relations, is the propaganda wing of the same" [referring to his assertion about Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood]. His remarks drew an immediate response from the dais: the council president said they would not endorse school activities tied to organizations criticized in the remarks and condemned violent or hateful rhetoric.
Council members and staff responded publicly to portions of Conklin’s remarks, and the council closed public requests after additional comments. The CRA portion of the meeting also received a public question about an incentive recipient that staff agreed to follow up on.
