Staff from the Lorraine Camacho Activity Center briefed the committee on March 13 about the center’s adaptive and inclusive outdoor programming and planned accessibility upgrades.
Staff said the center offers guided activities—kayaking, trail biking, rock-climbing, archery and nature-immersion programs—adapted for people with mobility needs using specialized equipment, transfer benches and trained staff. The site has a fully ADA-grade dock entry and staff said a new dock is in permitting that will add teaching and storage space and double adaptive transfer stations.
Staff said front doors are scheduled for replacement with automated doors this fiscal year and crews have tested door weights to ensure compliance with ADA guidelines in the interim. Program fees vary: some family kayaking programs are free or low-cost, many youth cycling sessions are about $5 per session and staff said financial aid and scholarships are available to increase affordability.
Speakers noted partnerships with nonprofits such as the Lone Star Paralysis Foundation and work with rehabilitation providers and schools to integrate adaptive programming and internships.
Next steps: staff said permitting for a new dock is underway, automated doors are being quoted, and the center will continue outreach to expand inclusive participation and support scholarship programs.
