Trail Mix Committee backs RTP grant support and lays out spring outreach and volunteer events

At its Feb. 10 meeting in Moab, the Grand County Trail Mix Committee moved to support GCATT’s RTP grant proposals and spent the remainder of the meeting reviewing spring events, outreach plans and agency updates.

Brendon Cameron, chair of the committee, opened the meeting and the committee discussed a motion "to support GCATT TRP grant proposal" (RTP grants fund trail crews). The motion was seconded and the group agreed to forward the recommendation to county commission administration; the meeting transcript does not record a formal roll-call or tally for that motion.

Committee members described multiple spring outreach and volunteer activities. Evan Smiley (GCATT) reported planning for a film screening of "Best Day Ever" on April 10 with a panel discussion, and Steward Moab will lead fundraising and education efforts tied to trail work. The Spring Spruce Up is scheduled for April 11; Landmark agreed to donate T-shirts for volunteers. The committee also discussed a Bike Bus prototype that ran with about 10 students plus adults; organizers hope to launch weekly Friday rides starting in April to encourage active transportation to school.

Steward Moab reported a Valentine’s Day fundraiser (Cactus Jack’s) with a donation-match to support education programming; Trail Ambassadors will resume in March. Sam Hodges (NPS) provided operational updates including seasonal hiring, gate placement on White Rim to signal motorized restrictions, and temporary closure for North Wash boat-ramp maintenance. Jacques Hadler (Grand County) updated members on the Mill Creek pathway, noting the acquisition process involves up to 36 landowners and that county hiring freezes have affected trail-crew staffing. Hadler also said a timed-entry decision remains pending and has been pushed to April 30.

Member reports included brief operational updates from agencies and citizen representatives. Matthew Olding noted Sand Flats revenue up 1.24% over 2024; Jonathan Duthrow (Health Department) said a "poo app" is up and running to help locate sanitation needs. The meeting adjourned at 12:53 p.m.; the next meeting is scheduled for March 10, 2026.
