Commission signals preference for Garden Ridge–Voyager intersection over Lake Flower for next traffic signal

During the work-session review of FY26–27 signal projects on March 10, Flower Mound staff asked the Transportation Commission for input on which of two locations should be prioritized if funding allows only one.

Assistant Director Matt reviewed candidate signal locations and told the commission that the Garden Ridge & Voyager site is close to Vickery Elementary and functions as a crossing-guard location, while the Lake Flower intersection met the peak-hour warrant "by two vehicles" and is only developing on the east side with new commercial activity.

"I feel very strongly that that one should be top of the list," one commissioner said in support of Garden Ridge and Voyager, citing school proximity and morning/evening congestion. Other commissioners agreed the Garden Ridge location better addresses immediate congestion and pedestrian-safety concerns; at least one commissioner noted Lake Flower "barely" met signal warrants and is less developed.

Staff outlined that Garden Ridge and Voyager could be considered for earlier funding and that construction would likely begin in the next fiscal year if approved; the Lake Flower site could remain on the CIP for future study as development continues. Commissioners also raised concerns about signal spacing, noting typical spacing preferences and that some locations are closer than the ideal quarter-mile separation but that safety and school access weighed in favor of Garden Ridge.

The commission did not take a formal roll-call vote on prioritization but the discussion established clear support for Garden Ridge & Voyager as the near-term priority to be considered in the CIP process. Staff will reflect commission input as the budget and project schedules are finalized.
