At the Brian Head Town Council meeting on Feb. 24, the council reviewed a proposal for a memorial flag site and honor trail presented by Flint Decker of Aspen Meadows and provided guidance on design and location choices.
Decker presented site options, flag specifications and phased budget concepts developed from surveys with current and former council members. Survey results showed broad support for a visible, inspirational flag site honoring armed forces, first responders and citizens with past service. Discussion centered on two locations: the pond area at Bristlecone Park and the Bearflat pump house/meadows area.
Residents weighed in: Dave Mason suggested adding a small pedestrian bridge over the adjacent creek to create a meditation area, and Martin Tidwell advocated for the Bearflat pump house location with an amphitheater offering views of Brian Head Peak and walking traffic. Council members debated visibility, accessibility, parking and the appropriate atmosphere for reflection versus activity.
The council reached consensus on several elements: three flagpoles approximately 35–40 feet high finished in bronze or black rather than white or silver; a memorial emphasis rather than an event venue; incorporation of natural materials; and opportunities for donations through bricks or plaques. The final site decision remained between the pond and the meadow area; staff will carry forward design and budgeting details for future council review.
