The Community Engagement Committee presented a preliminary program to mark America's 250th with roughly 40 days of events from Memorial Day through July 4. Committee members proposed a Hometown Heroes recognition series (monthly council meeting honorees with lobby displays), Paint Prosper Proud (May 28 downtown window painting), a downtown car show or live-music night on June 12, expanded Memorial Day and Fourth of July events, and additional downtown banners, flags and photo-op installations.
"We have put together a very preliminary budget, and I think that we can do all of these things for around 25 to $30,000," the committee presenter said. The committee plans to pursue volunteers and partner with local nonprofits and rotary groups for flag programs, giveaways and commemorative items. Staff and the committee will identify funding sources and return to the council with implementation details.
The plan also includes a public nomination process for hometown heroes via an online form and a proposed giveaway of commemorative hats and stickers for residents. The committee asked for council feedback and concurrence to move forward with funding identification and event planning.
