Soddy-Daisy adopts panhandling ordinance; rezoning at Old Dayton Pike advances

The Soddy-Daisy Board of Commissioners unanimously approved 2024-2025 Ordinance No. 1 on Sept. 5, adding a new Chapter 3 on panhandling to the municipal code, the board announced at its regular meeting.

Also at the meeting the board advanced a rezoning request for two parcels at 12701 and 12711 Old Dayton Pike from A-1 (agricultural) to R-1 (single-family residential) on first reading. Butch Burroughs appeared on behalf of the request, and Assistant Recorder Dolberry said Mr. Burroughs owns two parcels totaling about 11 acres with existing dwellings and proposes subdividing them into nine lots to allow seven additional houses.

Dolberry explained the practical effect of the rezoning: under current A-1 rules each parcel must have 75 feet of road frontage and a one-half-acre minimum, which would prevent the proposed division; R-1 zoning (with sewer service) allows 50 feet of frontage and smaller lots, enabling the subdivision Mr. Burroughs described. The Planning Commission recommended approval, and the commission approved the rezoning on first reading by voice vote (ayes unanimous).

The panhandling ordinance was adopted on its second and final reading by unanimous voice vote. The rezoning passed first reading and will return to the commission for a subsequent reading before it becomes final.
