Scott Frederick, representing VDOT, briefed the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors on Nov. 12 about several transportation projects and safety initiatives.
Frederick said VDOT crews have completed litter pickup on multiple routes and ongoing mowing is expected to finish the following week. He reported drilled-shaft construction is under way on the Route 92 bridge, with a projected completion date of August 2027. The Route 642 bridge replacement project will begin tree clearing after Nov. 15 with an expected completion in December 2026.
On safety, Frederick presented potential improvements at the intersection of Routes 360 and 92 — including rumble strips or additional stop signs — subject to traffic engineering recommendations. He also announced plans to implement photo enforcement in school zones; the sheriff's office will handle equipment installation for that program. Frederick described a pilot project for detecting slow-moving vehicles on Route 47.
Board members and staff discussed volunteer fire department responses to downed trees blocking roads and confirmed a procedure to dispatch volunteer departments first and contact a local VDOT residency or the TOC if volunteers do not respond.
The VDOT briefing provided project timelines and described safety proposals that will proceed through engineering review before any installations or enforcement begin.
